2 Day Papier Mache Sculpture Workshop with Madeleine Page
Modelling the figure using paper mache
Sat 6th and Monday 8th September
For centuries, artists have modelled the human form using a variety of materials - wood, clay, marble, stone, plastic, plaster etc. This workshop will show you how to create a figure in an unusual material - papier mache.

Cost: £90, including the life model and simple materials to start.
Papier mache is often seen mainly as a material used by children to make bowls, puppets etc. However, the V & A in London has some exquisite ancient Chinese and Korean items - masks and boxes, made from papier mache. Although using papier mache to create the human figure is still a fairly unusual art practice. Take a leap and join this course to learn how to draw a human figure from life, and then to use your drawing to model your paper mache figure.
A life model will be provided at the start, for you to catch the figure in a variety of poses. Using your drawings, you will then learn how to make a wire armature on which to build up the papier mache into your own standing or seated figure.
All materials for the papier mache and a simple stand for your work to sit/ stand on will be provided. You will need a sketchbook and some drawing pencils.
I look forward to meeting you, and getting into the world of sculpting in the wonderful material which is papier mache.
You may wish to bring something on day 2, (such as a block of wood or stone) on which your final sculpture might stand/ lean/ sit. Advice will be provided.
