Laura Howarth SWA

Laura Howarth

Laura is a painter and printmaker based in Bristol, UK.

Growing up and receiving her BA in Art and Education on the west coast (USA) she taught art at two leading secondary schools in the UK and now holds workshops for artists.

Printmaking is mainly experimental and she uses collagraphs, Gyotaku, carborundum printing and other non-chemical processes to push the boundaries and to achieve painterly qualities in the work.

Paintings are mainly semi-abstract landscapes which examine a spirit of place, often focusing in closely and calling on drawings, colour studies, photographs and remembered images in preparation for the final work.

Drawn to fragile landscapes with their changing moods, she uses layers of oil and cold wax medium to build up and uncover subtleties, nuances, light and texture. Laura works intuitively; there is no plan but there is intention. Paintings are constantly changing and evolving and by adding layers and then scratching away at the surface, traces of earlier layers are revealed and the process continues until her intention for the painting has been realised.

A member of the Society of Women's Artists and an Artist Network Member of the RWA, she exhibits widely and shows work in regional galleries and in private collections in the US, Europe and Australia.
