Kim DeVries

My practice centres around trying to evoke the feeling of a landscape at a particular time of day. I find contrast between the huge skies over the Somerset Levels and the dramatic falling away of the land in Cornwall challenging and exhilarating.

Some of my paintings are started in plein air and finished in the studio. I tend to immerse myself in the sense of the light I am trying to capture by taking hundreds of photographs and plastering the walls of my studio with them. I believe in thinking ‘abstractly’ while painting ‘descriptively’.  In order to describe the sense of the time and place I will sometimes move trees and change scale to achieve a certain form which is more evocative, in an attempt to get deeper into the sense of the landscape.
